     I am a native of New York and experienced traffic jams early in life. 10 years ago I left a career as a plasma physicist and came to Seattle to attend the UW Law School, hoping to learn how to positively influence energy and urban policy. Since running for Mayor in 1997, I have been a public advocate for the monorail project. In 2001 I published a $20 billion, 200 mile regional maglev monorail plan, parts of which were copied in the ETC long term plan. In 2003, I ran for this position, calling public attention to the fact that the 30% tax shortfall made construction of the 14 mile Green line impossible, and called for firing the executive director for covering up this fact. Hopefully, we can proceed to build the monorail under the current law without a revote, but we must reject the Cascadia deal. To begin with, how could progressive Seattle do business with a main contractor like Fluor International (whose board includes the wife of James Woolsey, the ex-CIA chief who was sent by Paul Wolfowitz to convince European leaders of Saddam Hussein’s ties to al-Queda)? Fluor has contracts in Iraq worth $1.6 billion. The alternative bidder is Team Monorail, which seems to have been cheated from a fair shot at the contract by the monorail board. If Team Monorail can build the Green line for $400 million less, using superior, lightweight technology, with the double track to West Seattle, and build the trains here in Seattle, then the Green line from West Seattle to Ballard can be saved. If not, the Green line should be abandoned and the SMP should cut expenses, go back to the drawing board, and put a better project, such as a regional maglev monorail plan, to the voters.
